Barricaded Suspect Taken Into Custody
On November 22, 2022, at approximately 1435 hours, the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) received a report of suspects attempting to steal parts from a vehicle at 2872 Highway 29 South, Bunkie, LA. The vehicle owner followed the suspects as they fled the scene in a vehicle. One suspect was reportedly dropped off in the City of Bunkie, and the other fled to another location on South Louisiana Street in Bunkie. Bunkie Police Officers attempted to get the driver to exit the vehicle and come to them, but the suspect ran into a residence at 411 South Louisiana Street and barricaded himself inside. Bunkie Police were familiar with 42-year-old Shedrick Lance Wiley II and witnessed him fleeing into the house. APSO and Bunkie PD Officers also verified that Wiley lived at 411 South Louisiana Street.
Further investigation revealed Wiley and the unknown suspect were attempting to steal a catalytic converter which resulted in an arrest warrant for Wiley and a search warrant for the residence. An APSO Negotiator attempted to communicate with Wiley for hours and attempted to get him to come out and surrender peacefully. Wiley refused to do so. APSO Deputies, with the assistance of Bunkie Police Officers, made entry into the residence and subsequently found Wiley hiding in the attic. Wiley apparently entered the attic through an indoor entrance. Wiley was given several commands to come down from the attic. He made his final attempt to escape apprehension by running in the attic and quickly exiting the attic through another outdoor access panel on the front porch. Upon Wiley leaping from the attic, he was swiftly arrested and taken into custody by APSO Detectives. Although Wiley had no apparent injuries, he was transported to Bunkie General Hospital via Acadian ambulance for medical evaluation and treatment. Upon his release later that evening, he was transported to APSO DC-1 Jail Facility where he was booked.
Wiley was arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant for the offenses of Criminal Trespass, Criminal Damage to Property, Attempted Theft, and Resisting Arrest or Officer committed earlier on November 22, 2022.
He was also arrested for the on-view offenses of Resisting an Officer by Flight, Resisting Arrest or Officer, and Disturbing the Peace, all of which were committed at South Louisiana Street in Bunkie on November 22, 2022.
The execution of the search warrant revealed Wiley still had the tools and clothing described by the original complainant. The items were seized as evidence.
Sheriff David L. Dauzat wants to thank the Bunkie Police Department for their swift response, their teamwork with APSO, and their assistance in the apprehension of Wiley. The Sheriff would also like to thank EMS, the Bunkie Fire Department, and other concerned citizens that assisted APSO Detectives on the scene.
